About the author

 

Gary Wallis grew up in Melbourne, where he joined the Field Naturalists Club of Victoria and developed his lifelong love of the bush and the collecting of rocks. He trained as a field geologist at RMIT, graduating in 1971 with a Fellowship Diploma in Geology. Gary started field research on the Wilsons Promontory granites 50 years ago, completing a Master of Science Degree at Monash University in 1981, and published scientific papers on the Prom granites until his death in 2024.

 

A 26-year career with the Victorian Department of Education included positions as teacher of geology at Museums Victoria, Statewide Curriculum Officer for Earth Sciences, a Regional Science Consultant and maths and science teacher in many schools, including ten years as Head of Science at Foster High School.

 

Gary was active in native vegetation protection and revegetation landcare projects and was Biodiversity Manager (Bushcare) at the West Gippsland Catchment Management Authority for 3 years. He co-founded Prom Coast Ecolink in 2023 and managed beef and dairy farming businesses in South Gippsland for over 50 years.

 

Gary was a long-term volunteer at Wilsons Promontory National Park, volunteering for talks and leading geology walks for Coastcare at Walkerville and for Parks Victoria.
