Wildlife in Sandy Point Autumn Event

Prom Coast Ecolink

12 Apr 2025

PCEL popped up at WiSP's Autumn Community Event

On April 12, Wildlife in Sandy Point (WiSP) hosted a fun and informative nature session for the community.

It was a fantastic day of interactive activities, nature & learning for all ages and an opportunity to connect with our incredible coastal wildlife here in South Gippsland.

Ella Hutchinson from The Dolphin Research Institute gave a fascinating talk including whale identification tips – right in time for Gippsland's spotting season!

Every winter, our coastline becomes somewhat of a whale 'highway' as humpback and southern right whales pass through the surrounding coastal waters. Now is the time to spot them. You can report any dolphin and whale sightings to the institute here and perhaps consider adopting a dolphin, whale or killer whale here - adoptions include an Adoption certificate of your chosen (real life) dolphin, whale or killer whale and updates on when they are seen. An excellent gift for the marine enthusiast in your life!

We also heard from special guest Susi Millton from TreeProject Australia .

Since 1989, they have sown over 2 million plants for the Victorian landscape! What stood out to us was the inclusion and capacity-building of metropolitan volunteers and those who may not be able to attend planting events. TreeProject provides training for volunteers to sow & grow seedlings, allowing them to make a valuable contribution to nature from their own back yards (or balconies!).

It was inspiring to hear from Susi about this simple, yet impactful model for revegetation. You can purchase grown-to-order, indigenous seedlings for your own projects for 55 cents each. We think that's pretty good! Learn more about TreeProject and how you can get involved or place an order here.

A special thanks to Christy Fejer of Wildlife in Sandy Point for coordinating this engaging event. It was a wonderful morning spent amongst incredibly insightful community members and dedicated volunteers.
