We helped plant seedlings Lace Monitor habitat along the new Inverloch to Wonthaggi Inland Trail.
We spent two consecutive weekends planting wetland seedlings with a group of local volunteers to revegetate a section of the new Inverloch to Wonthaggi Inland Trail.
Thanks to Bass Coast Landcare Network, Gippsland Threatened Species Action Group, Bass Coast Shire Council and a private landholder who worked together to make this project possible.
This particular section of the off-road trail is a win for nature and a contribution to the eco-tourism appeal of the project.
During planning, a decision was made to reroute the proposed path to preserve an intact patch of remnant Bunurong coastal woodland that supports threatened species such as the Lace Monitor.
This outcome is a strong demonstration of council, community, and landholder collaboration and commitment to conservation of the environment that makes our coastal towns so special.
The trail project broke ground this time last year. Once complete, the 14km path will link the two towns and ultimately form part of the Gippsland Odyssey, a 700km trail connecting the whole region.
Our planting efforts were rewarded with campfire billy tea, a tour of the site, and of course, the sheer satisfaction of rehabilitating wetlands and helping to create new habitat for local, threatened species.
