Prom Coast Ecolink
27 Sept 2026
This year, we spotted several platypus in the Franklin River including a puggle! We are thrilled to share our findings with the Australian Conservation Foundation as part of their Platy Project.
We are absolutely thrilled to have spotted several individual platypus in the Franklin River, Toora North on Sunday morning, including what appeared to be an adult and a puggle. Not a bad result for a 6:30am start on World Rivers Day!
Around 24 of us gathered just after sunrise and walked in to the viewing area with our thermoses and binoculars to wait for the platypus to head home after a night of feeding. Platypus are famously hard to spot, so we went in with modest hopes. The creek delivered.
Footage of the sightings from the morning (thanks Charlotte and Graham!) are being uploaded to the Australian Conservation Foundation's Platy-Project, which maps platypus across the country. The ACF has already acknowledged and thanked us for our contribution, which is a lovely bit of feedback for a group of volunteers standing in a paddock at dawn.
A big thank you to everyone who came along and to everyone who chipped in on the day. Your donations added up to over $230 for the morning. Prom Coast Ecolink is a volunteer landcare group, and that kind of generosity, along with your company, is what lets us keep running events like this.
Platypus Prowls will continue
This is the last official year of the ACF's Platy-Project, but we're not stopping. We'll keep hosting an annual platypus prowl and contributing what we see to iNaturalist, so the record of Prom Coast platypus keeps growing. Be sure to subscribe to our newsletter to hear about all of our upcoming events.
