Lyrebird Listening Weekend

Prom Coast Ecolink

11 July 2025

We had out biggest volunteer turn out yet for this popular, annual, citizen science event

We kicked off the Annual Lyrebird Listening Weekend with an engaging presentation by superb lyrebird expert by Dr Alex Maisey.

Dr Maisey is a Research Fellow with the La Trobe University Research Centre for Future Landscapes and Department of Ecological, Plant and Animal Sciences.

Oh, and a superb lyrebird expert! In fact, you may recognise him from The Message of the Lyrebird documentary. We are so thrilled to have Dr Maisey in our network.

Over the Lyrebird Listening weekend, volunteers meet at sunrise across different locations in South Gippsland to listen and record the call of the superb lyrebird. This data is used to help track local population numbers.

This year is the12th Annual Lyrebird Listening weekend in and around Cape Liptrap Coastal Park. It is entirely volunteer led with participation numbers continuing to grow each year. Look out for the 2026 dates!
