A mindful morning spent in the gullies
After a rain check on the original October date, a keen group of birders and sketchers finally came together in November at an exquisite private property on the Hoddle Range in Fish Creek.
Guided by local and highly respected field naturalist Rohan Bugg, we explored this biodiversity hotspot - a place of rest and refuge for many birds and wildlife. While conditions were a little too wet for much nature journalling, we were still fortunate to encounter an impressive array of species.
🪶 Species spotted:
Brown Gerygone
Brown Honeyeater
Corella (Short-billed)
Crimson Rosella
European Blackbird
Forest Raven
Golden Whistler
Grey Fantail
King Parrot
Lewin’s Honeyeater
Olive Whistler
Pacific Black Duck
Rose Robin
Shining Bronze Cuckoo
Striated Pardalote
White-throated Treecreeper
Yellow Robin
We also spotted a Wedge-tailed Eagle nest, along with owl splatter — with the family who live here reporting regular calls from Boobook Owls.
Birding brings together everything we value: time on Country, connection to place, citizen science, and a deeper understanding of who we share this land with - and what they need to thrive.
As time in nature becomes increasingly recognised for its benefits to wellbeing, we’re excited to plan more immersive events like this for the future.
