A bold vision for restoring the Battery Creek Reservoir landscape is taking shape.
This month we met with representatives from South Gippsland Water (SGW), Parks Victoria, Fish Creek Landcare, neighbouring private landholders, and other Hoddle enthusiasts on the SGW Battery Creek site to discuss collaborative action for weed and pest control, as well as future revegetation.
The Battery Creek Reservoir and surrounding land sit on the Hoddle Range in Fish Creek, and is home to a mix of remnant forest and revegetation. The revegetated sites — only 20 years old — have already developed into natural forest with a healthy mix of overstorey and understorey species.
It’s incredible how quickly revegetated areas can regenerate in South Gippsland!
The meeting sparked conversations with potential game-changing outcomes for biodiversity conservation and enhancement.
The Hoddle Range is incredibly important to us at Prom Coast Ecolink, as it forms the halfway point for a network of biolinks stretching from the rainforest to the coast.
We look forward to the possibilities this meeting presents for the legacy of this site, and to the security it can offer to significant local species that call it home — the Lyrebird, Burrowing Crayfish, Powerful Owl, Wedge-tailed Eagle and Strzelecki Koala.
