Franklin River Platypus Walk in Toora

Prom Coast Ecolink

22 Sept 2024

We went searching for platypus as part of the 'Platy-Project'

Over 50 citizen scientists joined us for our Franklin River Platypus Walk in support of the Australian Conservation Foundation’s ‘Platy’Project’. What a special, unusual experience to be with a large group of nature lovers in virtual silence, with only the sounds of dusk by the river filling the air.

Although there were some suspect ripples, we did not see platypus, however we left equipped with the skills to continue searching in our own time. We were lucky enough to see a couple of koalas which is wonderful to see along the incidental nature corridor of the Great Southern Rail Trail.

The Platy-Project is an annual event by the ACF so we hope to arrange another walk in 2025. We encourage everyone to keep attempting platypus sightings throughout the year and contribute any findings to the Platy-Project map at www.platy-project.acf.org.au or iNaturalist. Platypus spotting is a wonderful way to spend an evening (or dawn!) with your friends, family or simply with the company of bird song. Thank you to our member Megan for initiating this special event.
